Ooh, now this is a fun tag. Check out the original post here. Nobody tagged me, I just saw a couple of those “If you’re reading this, consider yourself tagged!” things and took them literally. Okay, here goes.

Never have I ever…

Started a novel that I didn’t finish

Never done that. I’m very stubborn and almost always finish the writing projects I start. I can only think of one I gave up on, which was a misguided attempt to write a fiction podcast.

Written a story completely by hand

I used to do that all the time as kid. But these days it’s mostly a pen for poetry and a laptop for fiction.

Changed tenses midway through a story

I’m pretty sure I’ve done this accidentally – it’s easily done.

Not researched anything before starting a story

I rarely do research before writing short stories. Though I’m bound to end up Googling stuff halfway through!

Changed my protagonist’s name halfway through a draft

I don’t think I’ve ever changed my protagonist’s name halfway through, but I’ve definitely changed the names of other characters.

Written a story in a month or less

I’ve finished the first drafts of two novels during NaNoWriMo, and have definitely written short stories in under a month.

Fallen asleep while writing

Haha, never. I can’t write well when I’m sleepy, and I wouldn’t want to risk falling asleep on my laptop and drooling on the keyboard.

Corrected someone’s grammar IRL/online

Only when they’ve asked me to proofread for them. Nobody likes a grammar Nazi.

Yelled in all caps at myself in the middle of my novel.

I’ve definitely left notes for myself, but they tend to be fairly polite notes, e.g. “This section needs work”. I try not to be mean to myself, even when I’m doing a shitty job, because writing is hard.

Used “I’m writing” as an excuse

It kinda blows my mind that I’ve never done this. I’m a very introverted person who loves a night in but I don’t think I’ve ever used my writing as an excuse not to go out or socialise. Probably because I don’t get that many invitations!

Killed a character that was based on someone I know in real life

Never done this. None of my characters are based wholly on people I know in real life, though certain traits, mannerisms or habits might sneak in there.

Used pop culture references in a story

Many many many pop culture references.

Written between the hours of 1am and 6am

I’m an insomniac and have definitely done this. 2am seems to be a good time for writing poems.

Drank an entire pot of coffee while writing

Never – I’m a dedicated tea drinker.

Written down dreams to use in potential novels

I have written down dreams, but it’s more to use in poetry than novels. Dream imagery can work beautifully in a poem.

Published an unedited story on the internet/blog/Wattpad

I won’t publish anything without at least some basic editing.

Procrastinated homework because I wanted to write

Nope. I’m a goody-two-shoes. Homework first, or I wouldn’t be able to enjoy the writing.

Typed so long that my wrists hurt

Never done that. But I think I just have strong wrists because I type all day at work and they never get sore.

Spilled a drink on my laptop while writing

Never done that, fortunately. I hope this isn’t tempting fate!

Forgotten to save my work/draft

Once again, I’ve never done this and I hope I’m not tempting fate!

Finished a novel

I have finished novels, though I couldn’t say for sure how many because I tend to write fiction that is somewhere between the length of a long novella and a short novel. If we’re defining a novel as 50,000 words or more, I’ve written three.

Laughed like an evil villain while writing a scene

Never. I like to think I’m not too sadistic towards my characters!

Cried while writing a scene

Yep, I’ve done that. There was a scene at the end of my second novel that had me in tears while writing it. I don’t think the novel in general was very good, but I’m still proud of that scene.

Created maps of my fictional worlds

I’ve never done this because I mostly write stories set in the real world, even though many have a supernatural element.

Researched something shady for a novel

Some shady items from my search history:

  • Best way to break someone’s nose
  • How to build a very simple bomb
  • What happens to the brain after you remove it from the body

Officer, I swear I was just writing a crime story!

I’m too shy to tag anyone by name, so if you’re a writer and you’re thinking this looks like a fun tag, you are now officially tagged!
